Perfume: Creative Partnerships
There’s a couple of perfume manufacturers who partner with different perfumers [perfume artists] L’Artisan is probably most well known with releasing rich, complex sents like “Dzing!”. Inspired by the circus, an olfactory mix of saddle leather, sawdust, carmelized candy, and rubber…Or Passage d’Enfer [Gates of Hell], a perfume that smells fire and incense. L’Artisan does contract with different perfumers, but they don’t really feature the “different perfumer” thing as part of their central message.
There are two other perfume companies that the partnership is central: Le Labo and Frederic Malle Editions des Parfums. Both the Le Labo and Malle are especially good about letting the artist do whatever he or she pleases. The results might not be so commercial, but they can be genius. {email from Angela}
L’Artisan also does an annual eau de toilette that is only around for a year, and they can be interesting. One year they did Fleur de Carotte, which smells sweet and vegetal like carrots. One year they did Ananas Fizz (pineapple). They’ve also started doing Editions based on a particular year’s flower harvest. A few years ago they did a fleur d’oranger that was only Tunisian orange tree flowers from one year. Kind of like vintage wine.
